The Mining & Solar Playbook
Turn cheap β or free β power into crypto. Worldwide, rate-agnostic, build it anywhere.
Home mining is one equation: profit = what the coin pays β what your power costs. Everything else is detail.
The number that decides it is your effective $/kWh β and the single biggest lever on that number is solar.
This playbook is built to work anywhere on earth: plug in your own rate, follow the roadmap, and use the solar
section to drive that rate toward zero. No single state, no single grid β your inputs, your build.
β‘ Step zero β your power cost is the whole game
Find your real number before anything else. It changes every conclusion below.
| Your effective rate | What's actually viable |
| > 15Β’/kWh | Marginal. Efficient GPU (Kaspa) or CPU (Monero) only; ASIC Bitcoin loses money. |
| 8β15Β’/kWh (off-peak plans) | GPU + CPU print small steady profit; merged-mining (LTC+DOGE) works. |
| < 8Β’/kWh (off-peak / solar) | Now Bitcoin ASIC becomes viable β and everything else gets comfortable. |
| ~0Β’/kWh (owned solar, daytime) | The whole table turns green. This is the goal β see the Solar section. |
How to find yours: read your utility bill's $/kWh (include delivery + taxes, not just supply), and check if an off-peak / time-of-use plan exists β mining at night/weekends can cut your effective rate 30β50%.
πΊοΈ The roadmap β zero to a profitable rig
Five steps, in order. Don't buy hardware before step 1.
1
Nail your true $/kWh
Bill rate + delivery + tax = effective rate. Ask your utility about a time-of-use / off-peak plan. This single number decides which machine β and whether to mine at all on the grid.
2
Match the machine to your power
High rate β efficiency wins: a modern GPU (Kaspa) or a CPU (Monero). Low rate (<8Β’) β an ASIC can pay. Buy used/efficient, check the J/TH (ASIC) or H/W (GPU) β efficiency, not raw hashrate, is profit.
3
Run YOUR numbers (not a YouTuber's)
Put your exact rate + hardware into WhatToMine and the NiceHash calculator. If it doesn't clear profit at your rate, stop here and go to step 4 first.
4
Crush your $/kWh β off-peak, then solar
Cheapest win first: move load to off-peak hours. The big win: own solar β it turns daytime power cost toward ~0 and makes the marginal rigs profitable. The whole Solar section below is this step.
5
Operate clean
Undervolt for max efficiency; manage heat & noise (check HOA/zoning/local rules β quietly, vary by area); join a reputable pool; secure a cold wallet; and log it β mining income is usually taxable where you live. DYOR on local law.
πͺ What to mine at home (worldwide)
Generalised β re-check live with your own rate, the coin price, and current difficulty.
| Coin | Hardware | Why | Best when |
| Kaspa (KAS) top GPU pick | GPU (modern, undervolted) | High efficiency, active network β the default home-GPU choice. | Any rate β€ ~15Β’ with an efficient card |
| Monero (XMR) CPU | CPU (high-core Ryzen / Threadripper) | Low power, privacy-by-design, RandomX favours CPUs β runs on a PC you may already own. | Almost anywhere β small steady yield |
| Ravencoin (RVN) | GPU | Long-running GPU coin; good secondary to diversify a GPU rig. | Break-even to low β secondary |
| LTC + DOGE merged | Small Scrypt ASIC | Mine both at once (merged mining) β two rewards, one machine. | Off-peak / low rate |
| Bitcoin (BTC) | High-end ASIC | The most secure network β but brutal efficiency competition. | Only with < 8Β’/kWh (or solar) |
βοΈ Solar β the multiplier that changes every answer
Owned solar pushes your daytime power cost toward ~0Β’/kWh. That's what turns the red rows green.
First: how you pay for it decides your ROI.
| Plan | You own it? | Best for | Watch out |
| Cash purchase best ROI | Yes | Lowest lifetime cost, full incentives/tax credits, max mining benefit. | Upfront capital. |
| Solar loan | Yes | Own the system, keep incentives, spread the cost. | Interest + "dealer fees" baked into price β compare APR. |
| Lease | No | $0 down, someone else maintains it. | Installer keeps the tax credit; lower savings; can complicate a home sale. |
| PPA (pay per kWh) | No | $0 down, pay only for power produced. | Escalator clauses raise your rate yearly β read the fine print. |
For mining, ownership wins β cash or a low-APR loan. You want the cheapest possible kWh you control, plus the incentive value.
Then: how to pick the best installer β anywhere on earth.
A method, not a brand. Run any company through this checklist, wherever you are:
1 Β· Panels Insist on tier-1 panels (e.g. Maxeon/SunPower, REC, Q CELLS, Panasonic, Meyer Burger, Canadian Solar, JinkoSolar, LONGi). Higher efficiency = more kWh per roof.
2 Β· Warranty 25-yr product + performance + a real workmanship warranty. The installer must still exist to honour it.
3 Β· Who installs Prefer in-house crews over subcontractors. Ask directly.
4 Β· Quotes Get 3 quotes minimum via a marketplace (below) β compare $/Watt installed, not monthly payment.
5 Β· Reviews Cross-check Trustpilot / Google / local forums for install quality + after-sales, not just sales.
6 Β· Incentives Confirm local subsidies / tax credits / feed-in and who keeps them.
7 Β· Battery Add storage if you'll mine after dark or want grid independence.
Compare on $/Watt installed and panel + inverter brand β that normalises every quote, in any currency, in any country.
π Where to start β by region
Starting points to get quotes from, not endorsements β always get 3 quotes and run the checklist above. Offers, names & incentives change; verify current.
πΊπΈ US β East Coast
Strong installer density + state incentives (NY/NJ/MA especially).
Installers: Trinity Solar Β· Momentum Solar Β· Venture Solar Β· Sunrun Β· Palmetto Β· ADT Solar (national)
πΊπΈ US β West Coast
Best sun + mature market (CA/OR/WA). Net-metering rules shifting β check current.
Installers: Sunrun Β· Tesla Solar Β· SunPower-certified dealers Β· Semper Solaris (CA) Β· Freedom Forever Β· Elevation
